Juntos Students Earn College Scholarships
Written by Sara Tiscareno-Kennedy
20 scholarships. 40 envelopes. 3 recommendation letters. What do these things have in common? They are all part of the local scholarship process for students in both North Wasco and Hood River County. Students applied for various scholarships and were required to complete complex packages for each of them. Whether it was a one-time scholarship or a highly coveted renewable scholarship, students worked hard to turn in their essays, recommendations, and finally catch a breath once they were all completed. Partners throughout the Columbia Gorge provide scholarship opportunities to these students so that in return, they can one day give back to their high school or come back and serve their community.
As an Aspire mentor, I have been with these students and their process of applying to college since September. These students that I have been a mentoring, are also students I know through the Juntos program. Many of these students had the mindset that they wouldn’t be able to find ways to afford college. Through the anxiety, worried comments, or deadline setbacks, they were able to overcome this mentality by applying themselves, and were all fortunate enough to receive at least two scholarships during the awards night! This will assist the Juntos students tremendously as they plan to attend Linfield College, Gonzaga University, Mt. Hood Community College, Columbia Gorge Community College, Santa Fe Community College, George Fox University, Western Oregon University, Portland State University, and Oregon State University. The students plan on studying criminology, nursing, business, marketing, teaching, and biology. They are all on the path to higher education, and the Juntos program is so proud of each and everyone of them!
