SUMMER MELT

Incoming Student Summer Support

Summer melt is a term used to describe graduating high school seniors who applied and were accepted to college yet don’t show up in the Fall term. It is estimated that between 10 to 40% of prospective first-year students who intend to go to college who are lost to summer melt.

Open Campus has developed a curriculum and mentoring program to support students through their senior year, into the summer between high school and their first term of college, and beyond. Our Open Campus Manager in Central Oregon piloted the program beginning in 2019, supporting about 65 students each year across five area high schools. The curriculum includes a guide with important dates and check-in points along the path to college, including: selecting a college, applying to college, paying for college, and campus life.
